The Most Delicious Sandwich Franchise Shop In Taiwan
The Most Delicious Sandwich Franchise Shop In Taiwan
A lot of people wonder about eating American food when they’re in Taiwan. When it comes to American food, meaning sandwiches, as a North American myself, it can be a bit daunting in Taiwan to find something you like. Sometimes it’s a little bit difficult to just survive on rice and noodles all the time. As an alternative to regular Taiwanese food for you I found nice submarine sandwich shop you might like called Subber.
What is it?
While I was living in Taoyuan, I found this delicious submarine sandwich restaurant called Subber. Being fond of other submarine sandwich franchises, I was hooked right away.
What do they have?
It’s a typical submarine sandwich formula. You pick the bread that you want, and you tell them what kind of sandwich you want. Then you pick the toppings, and also the sauces. For those of you who have been to other restaurants that are similar to this kind, this formula will be quite familiar.
How does it compare to others?
I remember the first time that I had a submarine sandwich when I was in Japan, I was kind of surprised. The bread was super small, and the toppings were also rather lacking. When I asked Japanese people while I was in Japan why the food in Japan was so small, usually they would say that Japanese people are small too, with a smirk.
In Taiwan, I would say that a lot of franchises that come from American markets that come here, usually fail. And the reason why is because, in Taiwan, a lot of American restaurants do not cater to their specific tastes. Let me give you an example about it in the Philippines.
In the Philippines, they serve rice at McDonald’s. So a lot of Filipino workers come to Taiwan and ask, why is it that McDonald’s doesn’t have rice over here in Taiwan? It’s the same in Taiwan. A lot of American franchises will come over to Taiwan, and they don’t have what Taiwanese people want. Probably except for McDonald’s, KFC, and maybe Burger King, not a lot of fast food franchises have enjoyed very much success in Taiwan.
Enter Subber
What makes this restaurant I would say a little bit different, is it has different flavors that Taiwanese people want. I couldn’t explain why, but for some reason, I would say that Taiwanese people love spicy Mexican food, and they do have a Mexican-style submarine sandwich on the menu at Subber. They have your typical tuna, and they also have a kind of Hawaiian sub, whatever that means. The point is that they have all the different types of sandwiches that most Taiwanese people would want, and if they don’t want them, then foreigners who live in Taipei or surrounding cities will want them.
While it’s true that a restaurant like this probably would not flourish very well in a very small town in Taiwan, for the most part, I would say that during lunchtime, Subber is usually pretty crowded in a big or mid-sized city in Taiwan.
How is the taste
For me, I usually get myself a tuna fish sandwich. Some people like to order steak, and I like that, but I don’t order it all the time. There's also a delicious chicken Caesar that you might want to try out too. I would say that the taste of most of the sandwiches at this place is pretty tangy, maybe a little bit sweeter even. As far as the hot sauce goes, it’s pretty hot. I would say it’s about medium-level hot. If it was any more than that, then Taiwanese people probably wouldn’t eat it.
Can it satisfy me if I am hungry?
For the price, I would say that you probably get a pretty good bang for your buck. Compared to other submarine sandwich shops, I would say that you probably pay about 66% of the price at Subber. In other foreign shops that are very similar to this, you will probably spend 10 bucks USD, just to satisfy yourself. I would say probably most people in Taiwan either couldn’t afford that or wouldn’t prefer to spend so much money, just for lunch.
The verdict, final opinion
I go to Subber in Taiwan maybe twice a week. I wouldn’t go every day, just because I think it’s a little too much carbohydrates for me, but that’s just my personal opinion. I love the taste. I love the fact that I don’t necessarily have to have Taiwanese food every single day. It’s just a kind of good melange between American-style fast food, and Taiwanese-style tastes. If you live in the big city in Taiwan, or if you live on the outskirts of Taipei, then definitely I suggest that you check it out
Thank you for sharing your experience with foreign foods in Taiwan, very detailed and interesting!
