5 Reasons Why Teaching English Online is Absolutely the Best Job
What is teaching English online?
You have to be living under a rock to not know what teaching English online means. There is a huge market, for people who speak English as a second language or as a foreign language, for them to learn online with somebody from a native English-speaking country.
So that allows Americans, Canadians, British people, Australians, and a plethora of different countries to tell people what they know, use the language that they’ve learned all of their lives, and teach it to them in a way that’s fun and engaging. In this article, I’m gonna show you a couple of reasons why teaching English online is the best job
No boss
Because you’re working from wherever you want, you don’t have anybody that’s going to be micromanaging you. Yeah, you’ll have to do reports. Yeah, the company has somebody that’s gonna be inspecting you now and then, but there’s nobody that you have to answer to directly. For that reason, I think that teaching English online is great
Work whenever you want
If you want to take control of your own schedule, teaching English online is for you. Most people who teach Englsh online work in different time zones.
For example, if you are a teacher from North America, and the company that you’re working for is in China, obviously they’re not gonna schedule a class for you at 2 AM for a class unless you left your schedule open in which case that’s your own fault. So you can work three hours a day, work four hours a day, and work all day on Saturday if you want. You are in control of your own schedule.
Work wherever you want
Nobody needs to know where you are. I mean, I work for a company right now, and sometimes they want me to do a speed test on my internet speed. This is the reason why they want to know where I am.
If I didn't want to tell them though, and my internet was reliable, I could say that I’m at home, or I could be in Thailand, they wouldn’t know either way.
If the online class is lagging, if I am teaching from a different location than usual, then they’re gonna be asking me about it. But usually they wouldn’t know the difference between if I was at home or in a hotel room teaching online.
That is why English teaching online is so flexible. Especially if you wanna be a digital nomad, or if you’re the type of person that just wants to get up and go somewhere, then it’s a really good way to work. Everything is flexible. If for some reason you wanted to go to your friend's house and go teach English online, then you can go ahead and do that
No commute
If you’ve been reading my blog, then you probably know that I’m a fan of no commute. Commuting for me personally is honestly a waste of time. I know that people choose to live in certain places, and they choose to also go to certain places for their job. However, you could be using that time for something else. You could be exercising, you could be learning a new language. You could be just relaxing if life is too stressful for you. Just think about the habit of commuting every day.
If your commute is one hour, you spend an hour going there and another hour coming back. That’s two hours of your life that you’re wasting every single day, in a 24-hour day. Over five days a week, well you get a picture. People are wasting time. They are wasting time waiting. Waiting in traffic. Waiting in line. You could just be using that time for something else that’s more important in my opinion.
If you’re teaching English online, you have zero commute. If you wanna talk about the shortest commute possible, then get out of bed and then go sit in front of the computer. How many seconds is that? Nice commute right?
The class size is small
It varies. I mean I’ve seen some online classes that have six students in them. I wouldn’t recommend that. There are some apps actually that you can teach maybe 10 students at the same time.
I know what they’re trying to do. They’re trying to mimic the idea of having a regular classroom but it’s all online. To be honest with you I don’t know where technology is at right now, and where it’s going, and in the future. Maybe we will be able to re-create that type of atmosphere.
For now, I think that it doesn’t work. For me, I think that a maximum of three or five students is best.
Now if you’re a university student and you’re learning basically in a classroom, where they just have a lecture, and somebody is lecturing from the front of the auditorium, then I think it’s OK. For really independent learners, even if there are 100 students, I don’t even think it matters.
Looking for a part-time income, or maybe just something to do, or a full-time career change, there’s probably something in online English teaching for you.
As for me, I was teaching online full-time for a while, and then some changes happened. There will always be some online English teaching companies in the world right now, because of obviously where the world is going, and where our technology is at right now. We have the technology to learn almost anything online. Hopefully, you can get the right apps, the right company, or just do freelance by yourself. Either way, teaching English can be a worthwhile endeavor that I thoroughly feel you will enjoy.
You wont find a better job than teaching online.
