How to live the high life in Taiwan
A lot of people ask me why I’m living in Taiwan. Everybody has their reasons for living abroad. After going to Japan and South Korea, I finally picked Taiwan to settle in. It’s hard to explain to other people why some come here to stay. Usually, people come here on a student visa, or they come to work to teach English. After that, they fall in love with Taiwan. I'm going to explain what I mean in a couple of short paragraphs
1. The people of Taiwan are tolerant and welcoming, which makes a living in the country a rewarding experience.
I would say that Taiwanese people probably mind their own business. Many things go on in the world, and people here focus on working on what they’re doing. I mean, even if you look at gay marriage, it was a big issue, and now you can do that in Taiwan if you want. I mean, among other things, people are interested in foreigners over here, but if you adapt to the culture, people will leave you alone
2. The quality of life in Taiwan is high, with affordable housing, excellent medical care, and a fun and active social scene.
One of the things that probably would draw to people to Taiwan is healthcare. I mean, it’s always good to have a backup plan in case you get sick. It would help if you didn’t have to worry about that. They have affordable health insurance if you’re working here. Even if you’re not working here, you can afford the medical insurance anyway. I would say it’s perhaps 30% of the cost of any western country, and you will get the same medical procedure done. Long story short, if you’re sick, it doesn’t cost you an arm and a leg like in other places.
3. The education system in Taiwan is among the best in the world, and the country has a strong economy that is growing steadily.
Taiwanese people are the most skilled when it comes to certain areas. Talented computer programmers come from Taiwan. Some of the most exciting inventions have also come from Taiwan. For example, the creator of instant noodles is from Taiwan. He did immigrate to Japan and changed his name to Japanese, but he is from Taiwan. So many brilliant people come from Taiwan, and it’s hard to deny how educated some of the people are from Taiwan. Also, the economy is going steadily, but at the same time, specific industries are thriving more than others. For example, Taiwan is one of the biggest industries for nuts and bolts in the world. That’s something a lot of people don’t know. As well as they are one of the leading manufacturers of semiconductors in the world as well. The Taiwan economy is unique, and it is growing steadily.
4. The natural beauty of Taiwan is a significant draw for tourists who enjoy the country's many scenic attractions.
You can’t deny the beauty of Taiwan. A lot of people that are from Taiwan, when they go visit other places abroad, will say that they are from the Hawaii of Asia. They wouldn’t be lying, but at the same time, I would say that certain places are more beautiful than others. For example, Yilan and Hualien are some areas that should be on your list to visit in Taiwan if you want to come here directly. The first one is good for surfing. The second one is a passive and quiet town. Although there is an international school there, I would say that it’s very homely.
All in all, I would say that Taiwan is a good go. The reason why I came to Taiwan is that a long time ago, people said that teaching English in Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan were the best places to teach English. I would say probably that that has changed. There are certain Middle Eastern countries and, of course, mainland China that have outstanding salaries in English teaching. But the landscape is constantly evolving. If you want to come to a place where you can mind your own business, grow your family, have a pretty good education, and I have excellent medical care, Taiwan may be for you.
